When a witch wanted to visit another witch all she did was fly there on her broom stick.
Witches had a helper called an imp who would carry out the witches’ orders.
All witches have a black cat, a white mouse, a black raven, a toad, a lizard or an elf to carry out her bad spells. Each potion is boiled in a cauldron. The mixture must be stirred anti-clockwise.
Superstitions have been told of witches casting spells on unsuspecting people, transforming themselves into different forms and causing other magical mischief on Halloween.
It was said that if you wished to meet a witch you had to put your clothes on wrong side out and walk backwards on Halloween night. Then at midnight you would see a witch.
When the early settlers came to America, they brought along their belief in witches. These legends of witches spread. Native Americans also believed in witches and the black magic beliefs of the African slaves.
Black cats have long been associated with witches. There are many superstitions that have evolved about cats. It was believed that witches could change themselves into cats. Many people believed that cats were the spirits of the dead.
One of the best known superstitions is that of the black cat. If a black cat crosses your path you would have to turn around and go back the way you have just come because many people believe if you continued on your way bad luck would strike you.
