All Souls' Day

All Souls' Day was first celebrated in the ninth century. It was established out of solicitude for the souls of those who had died but were still lingering in purgatory, on their way to heaven. Prayers said on the day implored God to help them quickly to attain 'the fellowship of the heavenly citizens'.

Those people who didn't believe in purgatory would still observe All Souls' Day but would pray to all the dead.
